The Network of the Baltic States Forensic Institutions (NBSFI) was founded on 7 May 1999 by signing the Memorandum of Understanding between forensic institutions of the Republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The memorandum was reinforced on 18 April 2008 by the Directors of the Baltic Forensic institutions.
According to the Memorandum the aim of the NBSFI is to promote co-operation between the institutions, exchange of information, knowledge, and mutual aid.
The first Meeting of the Document and Handwriting Experts of the Baltic States (June 2001) was held in Riga, followed by other meetings, work groups, exchange visits and participation in various projects, such as "Find a Forensic Expert" to develop the The Register of Forensic Experts and the Unified Classification of Forensic Examinations accessible on-line. Register contains information on forensic experts in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
