State Forensic Science Bureau of Latvia in cooperation with the Latvian Court Administration of Latvia held a workshop “New Forensic Capabilities” on 13 October 2022 in Jurmala, Latvia, within the project “Justice for Growth” funded by the European Social Fund.
Representatives from the Latvian law enforcement institutions – State Police Criminalistics Department, Prosecutors office, courts, Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau, Road Traffic Crime Investigation Bureau, State Forensic Science Bureau and Lithuanian law enforcement - Forensic Science Centre of Lithuania, Lithuanian Police Forensic Science Centre, and Estonian Forensic Science Institute attended the workshop.
Roberto Chirico from ENEA (Italy), Giuliano Iacobellis from RaCIS (Italy) and Johannes Peltola from VTT (Finland) covered new possibilities of crime scene documentation in 3d environment and introduced the project "Real-time on-site forensic trace qualification" (RISEN).
Francesco Saverio Romolo from UniBg (Italy) covered the topic of a dangerous crime scene and contribution of analytical chemistry.
Vitālijs Freidenfelds from SFSB (Latvia) presented questioned document and ink dating in the State Forensic Science Bureau. Kristīne Dokāne from SFSB (Latvia) introduced plant and animal DNA as forensic evidence and examination possibilities.
Use of facial recognition in the investigation of crime across EU member states and key findings of the project “Towards the European Level Exchange of Facial Images” (TELEFI) was presented by Andra Sirgmets from EKEI (Estonia).
Sophia Berkani from the Forensic institute of the French Gendarmerie (IRCGN, France) presented a European Toolkit for microtrace analysis developed in the project “Scientific High-throughput and Unified Toolkit for Trace analysis by forensic Laboratories in Europe" (SHUTTLE).
Henrikas Vaitekūnas and Kęstutis Graželis from FSCL (Lithuania) introduced the use of 3D technologies at the Forensic Science Centre of Lithuania
Andrius Žalnerauskas from LPFSC (Lithuania) presented aerial survey and 3D Scanning technologies development in Lithuanian police Forensics Units.
